After the excitement of the harvest, calm has finally returned to the hillsides of Domaine Schaeffer-Woerly. This week, true autumn weather settled over Alsace. Between crisp mornings, beneficial moisture, and golden light. Our organic winery Dambach-la-Ville offers a magical spectacle in the heart of the vines.
However, autumn is not just a feast for the eyes. It is also a key moment for soil life, vine rest, and… warm hospitality in our cellar! Here is a look back in pictures at a colorful week at our estate.
Autumn Weather That Awakens Our Granite Soils
We had to be patient, but autumn is finally here! Temperatures have cooled down, and morning moisture has made its grand return. For a winemaker, this weather is wonderful news after the sunny weeks of the harvest.
Indeed, this gentle coolness allows the soil to breathe again. While walking through our rows this week, we spotted the first witnesses of this season: lovely wild mushrooms growing at the base of the vines. Their presence is never a coincidence. In an organic vineyard in Dambach-la-Ville farmed without chemical weedkillers or synthetic products, the underground mushroom network (mycelium) is very active. Consequently, it helps the vines draw minerals straight from the heart of our granite terroir!

Dream Landscapes: Dambach-la-Ville and Our Castles Under a Coat of Gold
While the soils are waking up, the vine foliage is gently preparing for its winter rest. Without a doubt, this is the most photogenic time of the year along the Alsace Wine Route. Day after day, the leaves turn yellow and dress the hills in a sumptuous golden coat.
Furthermore, the contrast with our local heritage is simply breathtaking. In the distance, the majestic silhouettes of the Ortenbourg and Ramstein castles (in Scherwiller) watch over this sea of yellow vines. And early in the morning, when the sun rises over the magnificent medieval village of Dambach-la-Ville, this low-angled light reminds us every day how lucky we are to work in such a setting.

Biodiversity Spotlight: A Neon Green Guardian on Our Vines!
Observing our vines in autumn also means taking the time to look at the small details. As the sap flows back down into the roots and the vine wood hardens to face the winter, our vine stocks serve as a refuge for all kinds of wildlife.
This week, we had an amazing encounter on the wood of a vine stock: a tiny neon green spider (often called Micrommata virescens or green huntsman spider)! With its vibrant color, it contrasted beautifully against the brown bark of the vine. These arachnids are precious natural allies for our estate. By hunting small pest insects, they actively contribute to the natural balance of our certified organic plots.

Crisp Autumn Weather Outside, Warm Hospitality in Our Tasting Room!
Although nature is gently slowing down its pace, life at the estate remains lively. While the new vintage ferments and ages quietly in our oak casks in the cellar, now is the ideal time to discover our current wines!
