The Grand Cru Frankstein is the undisputed jewel of our estate. It is located in the heart of the granite slopes of Dambach-la-Ville. This prestigious terroir is famous for its elegance and crystalline purity. Consequently, our wines possess a unique identity marked by mineral precision. They also offer a remarkable aging potential. At Domaine Schaeffer-Woerly, we work this land with deep respect. Our goal is to ensure that every bottle reflects the verticality of this exceptional site.
A Unique Terroir Defined by Two-Mica Granite
The Frankstein is distinguished by its specific soil. It is composed of two-mica granite. This hard rock naturally decomposes into what we call granitic sands. Furthermore, these sands are poor in organic matter but offer excellent drainage. These stones play a crucial role in the vineyard’s microclimate.
They store the sun’s heat during the day. Then, they release it slowly at night. This process ensures optimal ripeness for the grapes. To survive here, vines must drive their roots deep into the rock fissures. As a result, this effort brings a distinctive salinity and a sharp mineral structure to the wine.

Noble Grape Varieties Expressing the Granite’s Soul
At Domaine Schaeffer-Woerly, we cultivate three king grape varieties. Each one expresses a different facet of the granitic terroir.
Our Riesling Grand Cru Frankstein is the purest expression of the site. It offers a dry, straight, and chiseled profile. In addition, you will find vibrant citrus notes and a long mineral finish.
The Pinot Gris Frankstein finds a perfect balance between power and freshness. It reveals complex smoky aromas while maintaining a beautiful acidity.
Finally, our Gewurztraminer stands out for its refinement. It is never heavy. Instead, it offers delicate floral notes of rose and acacia.
Gastronomy and Food Pairings
The wines of the Frankstein are true gastronomic partners. They are designed to elevate refined cuisine. For instance, the mineral verticality of the Riesling suits noble seafood or grilled fish. It also pairs perfectly with poultry in delicate sauces. Similarly, the depth of the Pinot Gris allows it to match beautifully with mushroom risotto or white meats. Moreover, the Gewurztraminer provides a sophisticated counterpoint to spicy fusion cuisine. You can also enjoy it with strong cheeses like the local Munster.
