Freezing Cold or Fiery Hell? The Ultimate Guide to Alsace Wine Temperature

You’ve got a beautiful bottle from Domaine Schaeffer-Woerly in your hands, but you’re hesitating: finding the right Alsace wine temperature is the absolute secret to a successful tasting! Too cold, and your wine loses all its beautiful aromas. Too warm, and the alcohol takes over, making it feel heavy. To avoid treating your wine to a polar fridge or a radiator from hell, here is our complete guide to serving and storing your bottles perfectly.

White Wines: Cool, but not frozen!

Many people make the mistake of serving white wine straight out of the coldest part of the fridge. Big mistake! Extreme cold numbs the wine and hides the delicate floral and fruity notes of our Rieslings, Gewurztraminers, and Pinot Gris. Remember that a good Alsace wine temperature for our dry whites is between 8 and 10°C (46-50°F). It is just cool enough to awaken your palate without freezing your taste buds!

Pinot Noir: The Ice Trap

Serving your Pinot Noir ice-cold? A fatal mistake for its aromas! Aim for 14-16°C (57-61°F) instead.

Red wine should be served at room temperature, right? Well, not if your room is 25°C in the middle of a summer heatwave! However, tossing a glass of Pinot Noir into a bucket of ice is a tasting crime.
Our Alsace Pinot Noir expresses its crunchy red fruit notes best when slightly chilled, ideally between 14 and 16°C (57-61°F). If it’s too warm, pop it in the fridge for 20 minutes before serving, but please, keep the ice cubes for your cocktails!

Bubbles & Crémant: Precision is Key

Our thermometer never lies: 6 to 8°C (43-46°F) is the absolute sweet spot for a crisp and refreshing Crémant d’Alsace!

When it comes to our Crémant d’Alsace, precision is everything. Warm bubbles are heavy, and we want crisp, elegant, and lively fizz! The perfect temperature to pop a bottle of Crémant is between 6 and 8°C (43-46°F).
A quick tip: use an ice bucket with cold water and a few ice cubes to bring it to the perfect temperature gently. Our thermometer doesn’t lie: this is the sweet spot for a refreshing toast.

Wine Storage: Surviving the Heat

Heat is your wine’s worst enemy! Don’t let your precious bottles go through hell—store them in a cool, temperature-stable place.

Heatstrokes, UV light, and sudden temperature variations: welcome to wine hell! If your bottles are stored next to a hot radiator or in a sunny kitchen, they are cooking. For optimal aging and storage, your wine needs peace, darkness, and stability. The ideal storage temperature is around 12 to 14°C (54-57°F). If you don’t have a natural underground cellar, a good wine fridge is your best friend to avoid calling the fire department!

In short, mastering the Alsace wine temperature and avoiding heatstrokes during storage will guarantee unforgettable tasting moments with our domain’s cuvées. Grab your thermometers, treat your bottles with care, and most importantly: cheers! 🥂

The 3 golden rules for proper wine storage:

  1. Humidity: A good cellar should maintain around 70% humidity to prevent the cork from drying out.
  2. Stable temperature: Around 12°C / 54°F (and most importantly, no sudden temperature swings).
  3. Darkness and peace: Keep away from light (UV rays destroy wine) and vibrations.
