May in Dambach-la-Ville leaves little time for rest. As the sun warms the hillsides, the Alsatian vineyard grows rapidly. At Domaine Schaeffer-Woerly, this period requires our constant presence. We gently guide the vines. The goal is to perfectly prepare the ground for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between Manual Precision and Respect for the Soil<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Currently, our days are paced by manual shoot thinning. It is a true work of patience. We remove the unwanted young shoots. These useless shoots appear on the vine trunk. We remove them one by one. The sap can then focus on the fruit-bearing branches. Air also circulates much better through the leaves. This naturally prevents vine diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, we carefully maintain our soils. To respect our granite terroir, we favor mechanical tilling. We work the surface soil. This breaks the soil crust and limits evaporation. Weed growth is thus controlled without any chemicals. This step becomes crucial with the summer temperatures. It forces the roots to dive deep for moisture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monitoring the Vines Before the Flowering Explosion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The recent sudden heat is accelerating the vine’s cycle. We closely monitor the plant’s rapid evolution. Under the effect of vigorous growth, some future grape clusters can turn into tendrils. It is a fragile balance to preserve before the main stage: flowering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If forecasts are correct, the flowers will open next week. This is a true moment of truth for the winemaker. A quick and sunny flowering often announces a promising vintage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
